Bringing my unique experiences to the corporate world

My professional journey is informed by a diverse combination of experiences from the music, sports, military worlds.  I've personally adopted Bruce Lee's philosophy to navigate my life experiences: research my own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is essentially my own.

I focus on building strong relationships and team synergy while delivering results.  My professional strengths include: people leadership, public speaking, program management, critical thinking, strategy, analysis, operations and cross functional relationship building.

Music

I began playing the piano at age 5 and played consistently for 10 years.   In middle school and high school, I played the saxophone in the concert, marching and jazz bands.   I learned multiple genres ranging from classical and marching music, to gospel and jazz.   I have performed in solo recitals as well as in concerts with groups.  I've continued my musical journey primarily through singing.

Little did I know at that time, this would set a foundation for cognitive development and creative expression.  The piano and saxophone strengthened my fine motor skills which developed my ambidexterity.  Reading music enabled me to learn how to quickly translate words and symbols into music, as well as a general comfort with number patterns and mathematics.  Being able to use both my left and right brain enables me to see multiple perspectives and transition among the different altitudes of a topic with ease.  Being "on stage" at an early age helped me to learn how to calm my nerves in front of people, lean into the moment and balance the script with improvisation.

Sports

As a native of Charlottesville, Virginia, the college town atmosphere (University of Virginia) exposed me to the exciting basketball action of the Atlantic Coast Conference.  Basketball seemed to be a very good sports choice since I was 6'5" and able to dunk at age 12.  I played in different youth leagues and in one of the top high school programs in the state.  I played college basketball at the United States Naval Academy.  This proved to be a tremendous experience as I helped rebuild their program culminating in a NCAA tournament ("March Madness") appearance in 1994.  After college, I played in various semi-professional leagues across the United States, Spain and the Philippines.  I now coach and train players.

As a member of both high performing and developing teams, I've experienced and learned many life lessons through sports.  I've summarized these experiences into the following framework:

  • Being in Position – represents the individual and group development journey to acquire the desired skills, capabilities and competencies

  • Being Ready – represents the consistent discipline that typically happens through different forms of practice

  • Running the "Secret Play" – showing up with love and courage, while marginalizing fear and selfishness.  Leveraging the power to choose how to be present and how to have impact.

In my experience, you have the best chance to experience success when you run the secret play with others, while consistently keeping yourself in position and ready.  This is not only true in sports, but also in life.

Military

I attended the United States Naval Academy and am a proud member of the class of 1995.   As a Naval Supply Officer, I was trained in all of the logistics and business elements necessary to run a military base or ship.  While on active duty, I was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was a people leader, in charge of teams ranging up to 150 people.  My Navy days were rich with experiences in leadership and relationships  while navigating ambiguity and complexity at scale.

I summarize the many life and character-building moments from the military into this phrase: Serve others first.  Starting with a genuine curiosity and interest in others, I truly enjoy watching others succeed and experience their full potential.  I will do what I can to contribute to the success of others.
